Extra Large Dog Beds For Extra Comfort

Submitted by: Joe Walsh

It’s said that to truly understand someone you need to walk around in their shoes for a day. Well, if you could sleep in your dog’s bed for a night, which might be quite an eye opener too! “But I wouldn’t fit in there!” you cry. Well, does your dog really fit into his or her bed comfortably? If your dog is one of the larger breeds, like a Great Dane or Rottweiler, the chances are that hey may be squeezing themselves into a sleeping position that is not good for them. That is because there are not that many extra large dog beds on the market.

Why is the size of the dog bed so important?

Very big dogs are more prone to joint problems, particularly in their spines and hips. That is a sad fact of the extra length of the limb and the extra weight that they have to carry. That is why it is very important that you get your dog the right size of bed, so it can relax properly yet have all its joints and muscles supported. It is also necessary to get a bed that has extra strong padding, which will not sag under the extra weight of the dog. In addition, large dogs have stronger bites and they are tougher on their beds, chewing them and pummeling the sides, so you need something that is stronger than the average dog bed. Extra large dog beds give your dog all these benefits.

Types available

Extra large dog beds can be found in any shape in which a regular dog bed can be bought. In order to decide which type would be best for your dog you need to look at how your dog lies in sleep or at rest. You can find beds expansive enough for even very large dogs to stretch out in, if that is what they like to do. In this case, a rectangular dog bed would be best. This will allow the dog to stretch out fully and yet still have full body support. This is particularly important if your dog has hip or back issues. Also, one of these rectangular extra large dog beds can be good to accommodate two or three dogs who like to snuggle up together, and can be great for a nursing mother and her pups.

However, if your dog prefers to sleep curled up, legs tucked in, a donut shape would be the best type to buy. This will support your dog’s spine well as a dog that sleeps curled up needs increased back support, especially if it is a large dog. The built up sides of the donut bed will prevent your curled up dog from rolling off the bed and potentially hurting themselves.

Added extras

Extra large dog beds can also be bought with memory foam functions. A memory foam dog bed can be particularly good for elderly dogs and those with joint and muscular problems. The heat helps to loosen the joints and prevent the stiffness that they may get from lying down for a period of time. Extra padding is a requirement in the dog bed and helpful for reducing inflammation, such as that caused by hip dysplasia.

So, extra large dog beds can be found with all the features of any size of dog bed, but they are the best way to ensure the health and sound sleeping of your large dog.

US Senate unanimously passes genetic nondiscrimination bill

Thursday, April 24, 2008

In a unanimous 95-0 vote Thursday, the United States Senate passed a bill that would forbid employers and health insurance companies from discriminating against someone based on information learned through genetic testing.

The Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act, described by Massachusetts Senator Ted Kennedy as “the first major new civil rights bill of the new century,” will now be sent back to the House of Representatives, where it could be approved as early as next week. President George W. Bush, who would have to sign the bill for it to become law, has voiced his support for the legislation.

The bill forbids employers from firing, refusing to hire, or otherwise discriminating against employees based on genetic information, such as a family history of a hereditary disease. It also makes it illegal for employers to request genetic information of an employee or the employee’s family.

Health insurance companies are also addressed in the bill, which forbids them from requesting genetic information or using such information to set premium rates or determine enrollment eligibility. However, insurance companies would still have the right to base one’s health coverage on the actual presence of a genetic disease.

Americans can now be confident that their genetic information cannot be used by health insurers or employers in harmful or hurtful ways.

“For the first time we act to prevent discrimination before it has taken firm hold and that’s why this legislation is unique and groundbreaking,” said Maine Senator Olympia Snowe, who sponsored the bill along with Sen. Kennedy and Sen. Mike Enzi. Snowe fears the threat of discrimination may discourage people from undergoing genetic testing, which can help to diagnose a wide range of diseases and lead to lifesaving therapy.

Kathy Hudson, director of the Genetics and Public Policy Center, reports that 92 percent are worried that information gained in genetic testing may be used against them. “After a very long wait,” she says, “Americans can now be confident that their genetic information cannot be used by health insurers or employers in harmful or hurtful ways.”

One part of the bill addresses this concern. “Federal legislation establishing a national and uniform basic standard is necessary to fully protect the public from discrimination and allay their concerns about the potential for discrimination,” the bill reads, “thereby allowing individuals to take advantage of genetic testing, technologies, research, and new therapies.”

Oklahoma Senator Tom Coburn initially blocked Senate action on the bill, warning that it could potentially lead to excessive lawsuits against employers and insurers. But after changes were made to the bill to ease his concerns earlier this week, he supported the legislation and allowed the Senate to vote on it. “We certainly improved the bill from a liability standpoint,” said Coburn, an obstetrician.

Similar bills were unanimously passed by the Senate in 2003 and 2005, but in both years the bill stalled in the House. The current bill was passed in the House of Representatives a year ago by a 420-3 vote. A genetic nondiscrimination bill was first introduced 13 years ago by New York Representatives Louise Slaughter, who says the House will “get it out to the White House as quickly as we can.”

Choosing The Best Forex Broker For Your Forex Robot

Submitted by: Brenda Maison

We always say that forex robots aren’t created equal and the same goes for forex brokers. Picking the right forex broker is one of the most important things a retail forex trader does and if you thought there were a lot of things to consider when purchasing a forex a robot, the list is even more expansive when shopping for a forex broker.

There are dozens of forex brokers to choose from, so it’s important to evaluate at least several before deciding on one. And count this as just one more forex-related project this going to require some research and homework on your part.

Now if you know that you’ll be trading with a forex robot, the first thing you need to is make sure the broker you’re already using or will use with your forex robot has a trading platform that can accommodate your particular forex robot. As a rule of thumb, most forex robots are compatible with all of the MetaTrader brokers, so you probably don’t need to worry about finding a forex broker that works with your forex robot, but just keep this little tidbit in the back of your mind.

Questions To Ask Your Prospective Forex Brokers

There are several questions you should ask the customer service teams at the forex brokers you’re considering giving your business. Of course, you should ask if their platform is easy to use and if you can run your forex robot on it. Next, ask the the broker if it is regulated and by what regulatory bodies. A very important question to ask your broker if it’s a dealing-desk broker or introductory broker. We’ll talk more about this in future articles.

Ask your broker how much leverage they give you and if they rollover interest on overnight trades. And of course inquire about any account sign-up bonuses and if the broker offers premium charting services, news feeds and related products.

What’s The Next Step?

Well, if you already have a forex robot, now you need to try the robot out with a few brokers. Ask your broker if they have mini or micro accounts so you take your forex robot for a test run. Most forex brokers offer free demo accounts, it’s actually odd to find a forex broker that doesn’t offer free simulated trading, yet we still don’t favor demo accounts as a way of testing out your forex robot.

Next, investigate the customer service of your chosen forex. Is there someone available to answer your calls and emails 24-hours a day? There should be since the forex market is a 24-hour market. Obviously, ask about the commissions. No forex broker should be charging you more than the difference between the bid and ask prices in a particular currency pair. If you like to trade on the go, ask your broker if they have mobile alerts and trading options.

Picking a forex broker is a big deal, so make sure you commit the time to finding the right one. Your forex robot may just thank you.

Congressional panel concludes Gulf War Syndrome a legitimate condition

Thursday, December 4, 2008

A study by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs presented to a Congressional panel on November 17, has confirmed that Gulf War Syndrome is a legitimate illness contracted by soldiers who took pyridostigmine bromide pills in order to counter the effects of nerve gas during the First Gulf War in Iraq. Several other factors likely contributed to Gulf War Syndrome, including excessive exposure to pesticides, mainly Permethrin and DEET, and chemical weapons residue caused by the American demolition of the Iraqi munitions depot in Khamisiyah.

The report estimates that about 1 out of every 4 veterans of the Gulf War are affected by this illness; this could mean anywhere between 175,000 and 210,000 soldiers are affected by the syndrome. The report also concluded that veterans exposed to the toxins spread by the destruction of the munitions depot have died of brain cancer at double the rate of other Gulf War veterans. Other problems associated with the condition are: fatigue, headaches, joint pain, rashes, breathing difficulty, forgetfulness, circulation problems, and cardiac troubles.

Gulf War Syndrome has been the focal point of veterans rights groups since the illness first became noticed in the early 1990s. The United States and British governments claimed that the illness was merely psychological trauma from war misinterpreted as an illness, and veterans could not receive medical coverage for the illness.

“I feel vindicated, but I’m angry. This is so long overdue,” said Denise Nichols, an advocate for veterans’ rights and a nurse who served during Operation Desert Storm. The National Gulf Veterans and Families Association (NGVFA) said that many veterans committed suicide after learning that the government did not recognize their illness as real.

UK seeks pardon for executed World War I soldiers

Wednesday, August 16, 2006

The UK Defence Secretary Des Browne has announced a plan to seek approval from Parliament to grant a group pardon to more than 300 British soldiers executed during the First World War for offences such as cowardice and desertion.

The proposed pardon will include the case of Pte. Harry Farr, whose family had appealed to the Defence Secretary to grant a full, posthumous pardon. The Ministry of Defence informed the family lawyers of the decision hours before making a public announcement.

Farr’s family members said in a statement that they were “overwhelmed”.

The government proposes to pardon all those executed in World War I under the Army Act 1881 and the Indian Army Act 1911, for what are considered “battlefield offences”, such as cowardice or desertion, which may have been influenced by the stress of the battle. The proposal involves several Commonwealth and former colonial countries whose troops also fought alongside British troops. Mr. Browne said that he intends to introduce a suitable amendment to the current Armed Forces Bill to request Parliament’s approval.

Announcing the plan, Mr. Browne said, “I am conscious of how the families of these men feel today. They have had to endure a stigma for decades. […] I believe it is appropriate to seek a statutory pardon.”

Greek workers strike over austerity measures

Tuesday, June 28, 2011

Workers in Greece have gone on strike in protest against the government’s second round of austerity packages. Greek prime minister George Papandreou announced €28 billion in cuts Monday; loans worth up to €155 billion from the European Union and International Monetary Fund depend on the measures passing.

Tens of thousands of workers are planning to march through Athens and five thousand police officers have been brought into the capital to supervise the strike. Most public services in Greece are affected, including hospitals, ambulances, trains, buses, ferries and even air traffic control. The Athens metro will remain open “so as to allow Athenians to join the planned protests in the capital.” Thanassis Pafilis, an MP with the Greek Communist Party, said that the budgetary measures “are a massacre for workers’ rights,” adding, “It will truly be hell for the working man. The strike must bring everything to a standstill.”

With a sixteen percent unemployment rate in Greece, between 70 and 80 percent of Greek citizens oppose the cuts. The measures are “tough and in many respects unfair,” said Greek finance minister Evangelos Venizelos, but the government continues to push for austerity measures, as failure to secure credit may force the government and banks of Greece to default as early as July on the €380 billion in debt owed to France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the United States, Italy, Switzerland, Japan and Spain.

Teen broadcasts suicide online

Sunday, November 23, 2008

A Pembroke Pines, Florida teenager killed himself Wednesday, November 19, while broadcasting on the live video site Justin.tv. After making suicide threats and being encouraged by Justin.tv viewers and Bodybuilding.com forum members, Abraham K. Biggs, 19, committed suicide by taking an overdose of opiates and benzodiazepine, which had been prescribed for his bipolar disorder.

Biggs first began blogging about his planned suicide 12 hours before the actual event. He died after taking pills and lying on the bed in front of the webcam. After the broadcast, viewers who apparently thought it was a hoax posted messages such as “OMG”, “LOL”, and “hahahah”.

Hours later, after being alerted by viewers who had noticed that Biggs had stopped breathing, law enforcement and paramedics arrived, discovered his body, and covered the camera. The Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office has reportedly confirmed Biggs’ death.

According to Montana Miller of the Bowling Green State University, the circumstances of this case were not shocking: “If it’s not recorded or documented, then it doesn’t even seem worthwhile. For today’s generation it might seem, ‘What’s the point of doing it if everyone isn’t going to see it?'”

Biggs’ sister Rosalind was angry that neither the website nor its viewers reacted soon enough to save him. “They got hits, they got viewers, nothing happened for hours,” she said. She described him as “very happy” and “friendly and outgoing.” “On a normal day, you couldn’t really tell that he got as low as he did.” However, he did have relationship problems with his girlfriend, according to a friend.

Mental health professionals have warned about the possibility that other mentally troubled people would copy his actions. According to Dr. David Shaffer of Columbia University, “Any video showing it as heroic or romantic or glamorous could reduce the anxiety people might feel about suicide. It becomes a respectable behavior and lowers the threshold of suicide.” He and other psychiatrists recommend that potentially suicidal teens talk to others and “tell what’s going on.”

5-year old American girl dies after visiting the dentist

Friday, September 29, 2006

Diamond Brownridge, a 5-year old girl from Chicago, Illinois, has died after a visit to the dentist. Children’s Memorial Hospital officials say that the girl was rushed to the hospital when she never woke up after being sedated for a dental procedure. She had been in a coma, on life support, since being admitted to the hospital early in the weekend.

“She passed very peacefully and beautifully,” said the hospital in a statement that the family issued.

Ommettress Travis, the mother of the girl, was asked not to remain inside the room while dentists were operating on the girl to repair two cavities and to have at least two caps replaced. Travis says after thirty minutes she was asked to come back in and found Brownridge not breathing, in the dentist chair.

Hicham Riba, a specialist and professional in anesthesia, who was also licensed, was the dentist in charge of the procedure.

“My family and I are so sad. May God bless Diamond and her family. Every time you have a tragedy like this, you pray more. I don’t think I will ever go back to a normal life after an experience like this,” Riba said in a statement on Wednesday, September 28.

According to the family, the girl had been given at least a triple dose of medicine that sedated her. Those drugs include: nitrous oxide gas, a single dose of an “oral agent” and an IV.

A judge has ordered that all equipment and materials used during the operation be protected and examined. The girl’s medical records have also been ordered to be examined.

There is no word on whether or not any charges will be filed against Riba or any of the dentist’s staff.
