University of Calgary scientist Keith cracks carbon capture conundrum

Thursday, October 2, 2008

A University of Calgary research team developed a new method for extracting carbon dioxide (CO2) directly from the air — a fundamental shift in carbon capture technology enabling capture of the most common greenhouse gas from so-called diffuse sources like aircraft, trucks and automobiles that represent half of the greenhouse gases emitted globally.

Professor David Keith, Director of University of Calgary’s (UofC) Institute for Sustainable Energy, Environment and Economy (ISEEE) and a team of researchers from UofC’s Energy and Environmental Systems Group built and operated a prototype system this summer producing results that compared favourably with commercial carbon capture systems. Two ‘provisional’ patents have been filed on the technology but Keith warns there are still “many pitfalls along the path to commercialization.”

Using a process adapted from the pulp-and-paper industry that halves the cost of CO2 air capture in their custom-built tower, Professor Keith and his team captured the equivalent of about 20 tonnes per year of CO2 (approximately equal to the yearly output of one person in North America) directly from the air with less than 100 kilowatt-hours of electricity per tonne of carbon dioxide on a single square metre of scrubbing material.

“This means that if you used electricity from a coal-fired power plant, for every unit of electricity you used to operate the capture machine, you’d be capturing 10 times as much CO2 as the power plant emitted making that much electricity,” explains Professor Keith.

A report co-authored by Keith in the American Chemical Society’s journal Environmental Science & Technology explains “nearly all current research on carbon capture and storage (CCS) focuses on capturing CO2 from large, stationary sources such as power plants. Such plans usually entail separating CO2 from flue gas, compressing it, and transporting it via pipeline to be [stored] underground.”

Using CO2 air capture technology, “a company could, in principle, contract with an oil sands plant near Fort McMurray to remove CO2 from the air and could build its air capture plant wherever it’s cheapest — China, for example — and the same amount of CO2 would be removed,” says Professor Keith in a UofC press release.

“While it’s important to get started doing things we know how to do, like wind power, nuclear power, and ‘regular’ carbon capture and storage,” Professor Keith continues, “it’s also vital to start thinking about radical new ideas and approaches to solving this problem.”

ISEEE’s Executive Director David Layzell points out that “energy-efficient and cost-effective air capture could play a valuable role in complementing other approaches for reducing emissions from the transportation sector, such as biofuels or electric vehicles.”

Oral Roberts University president accused of illegal political donations and financial misappropriation

Friday, October 5, 2007

Richard Roberts, the President of Oral Roberts University, and his wife, Lindsay Roberts, are accused of illegal political contributions, financial wrong-doing, and wrongful firings in a lawsuit filed Tuesday.

The lawsuit was filed by three former professors who claim “they were wrongfully dismissed after reporting the school’s involvement in a local political race.” According to KTEN television news, “Roberts’ statement says personal expenses are charged to him and he personally pays them on a monthly basis.” On October 3, Roberts “told students and faculty during his weekly chapel Wednesday that the lawsuit is about intimidation, blackmail and extortion.”

Richard has been president of ORU since his father, Oral Roberts university founder and former faith healer, “semi-retired” in 1993.

Wheel Covers 3 Reasons To Check Out The Greatness

By John Callahan

The world of auto care is an interesting one. There are a lot of people that are trying to get their car to look its absolute finest, and for some, that means spending a lot of time and effort looking for the perfect type of wheel and accessory to match it. Some people will immediately think about rims, and that s a good option, but it could cost a lot of money. If you don t have the money to drop on a set of nice rims, and special wheels, consider the next best thing, and in some cases the better option, wheel covers.

Some are going to be skeptical right away, and that s ok, the notion of hubcaps have gone through some funny moments in recent memory. If you re not one of the millions of people that are skeptical about this option, than consider the following 3 reasons to check out the greatness of covers:

Style First and foremost, just like rims can make a car more attractive, the proper cover can create an excellent option for those that are looking to exemplify style and substance without having to buy special kind of wheels. The first thing that people realize with other options is that rims cause standard wheels to fail, so in order to make a car workout well, a vehicle must have a combination of rim and wheel to make it worthwhile, otherwise it will not work. The cost associated with buying 4 sets of wheels and 4 sets of rims can be in the thousands of dollars and in some cases tens of thousands of dollars. With an alternative, you can save thousands and still have a sweet ride, which you can show off with relative ease.

Function As aforementioned, the traditional route of wheel style, forces a car owner to evaluate the mechanism that allows a car to roll. Now, if you get a rim that doesn t fit the wheel, you can t drive, but if you buy a wheel cover that is even a bit off center or not so good upon first glance, you can still drive around. No new tires needed, no expensive updates, you simply need to set them in and forget the rest.

Cost We touched on this earlier, but it s absolutely a good thing to look at the costs associated with wheel covers. You ll end up paying 1/3 less if not more on a pair of hubcaps rather than other options. It s an incredible feeling to get a slick ride without having to drop a lot of money, and covers do it far better.

When you re looking to upgrade your automobile make sure you shop around, look for a style that fits your overall needs and budgets. Don t neglect to look around at a variety of options, and make sure that the cover fits your wheels properly. You ll get the same type of elegance that you would with more expensive options, but without the hassle of hidden costs. If you re in doubt, at least look around and see what a cover can do for your car.

Auckland City Council acts to remove suspect chemicals in pre-school’s soil

Saturday, April 1, 2006

Chemicals, which the Auckland City Council said are a suspected cause of cancer and are considered toxic, have been found in soil at a children’s playcentre in Auckland. The contamination was found at the Auckland Central Playcentre in Freemans Bay, and the Council will now spend $100,000 removing the top 50 cm (about 20 in) of soil at the playcentre, doing landscaping and replacing playground equipment.

The presence of “polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, including benzo-a-pyrene,” was suspected at the school playground and was confirmed by a chemical analysis on Tuesday. The chemicals may cause temporary digestive and respiratory distress, as well as irritation of the eyes and skin. The levels of benzo-a-pyrene found were between 0.06 and 4.82 milligrams per kilogram of soil at surface level, according to the Ministry of Education. A potential risk is present at levels above 3.5 mg.

What is Gemcoin?

GEMCOIN – a revolutionary, legal digital currency, backed by $15B in assets! Launched in September 2014

Remember BitCoin’s amazing rise to power? GEMCOIN has some things in common, but is far stronger…

GemCoin is a currency, whilst BitCoin is a payment instrument or network. Let’s take a look at the BitCoin:

Unlike currencies, BitCoin has no sovereign protection, and its value derives from market demand at any given point. The rules are defined around computer systems

Investment in BitCoin is entirely anonymous, and most of you will be aware about recent speculation as to who is the owner/founder and who the major holders are.Payment systems with no real foundation can be pretty dangerous!

GEMCOIN is a currency based on concrete reality, backed by actual capital assets, in the form of productive gem mines across the world…

The currency has been legally recognised, and thus should not suffer the yoyo effect illustrated above. At launch, one GemCoin was worth $0.05, and two months later the value is more than 95% higher. There is zero chance of devaluation.

Gem Coin is the only virtual currency with an intrinsic value: a perfect guarantee!

Its value is backed by parent company AFG’s gem mines, and the currency can never devaluate, as it is backed by its equivalent in precious stones. Gemcoin members and investors are already trading and distributing the GemCoin. There are 20 million members and 3000 offices and financial centres for Gemcoin at end 2014.

GemCoin will be a huge success, probably more than BitCoin. THE OPPORTUNITY OF A LIFETIME!.

This might even become a sort of universal currency, that could lift all constraints, and market costs. What is more, at this point, it is tax-free, and far from checkable channels, while being fully legal. The possibilities are endless!

Toyota accused of misleading public over recalls

Tuesday, February 23, 2010

Toyota has been accused by a U.S. House of Representatives committee with misleading the public and investigators over its recent recalls.

The accusations, in a statement from the House Energy and Commerce Committee, claim that Toyota both relied on a flawed study in its assessment of the issue of sticking accelerator pedals at the heart of the recalls, and then made misleading statements about its response. According to the authors of the letter, Henry Waxman and Bart Stupak, Toyota dismissed, rather than investigated, the idea that the cars’ computers were at fault. In a statement, James Lentz, the president of Toyota’s American division, claimed that hardware issues were to blame, and that dealers were repairing the faulty part. Toyota also released a study commissioned from the research firm Exponent that said electronic systems were not to blame.

According to the House committee, however, the study involved only six vehicles, none of which had problems with their electrical systems, and was insufficient to produce an accurate result. “Our preliminary assessment is that Toyota resisted the possibility that electronic defects could cause safety concerns, relied on a flawed engineering report and made misleading public statements concerning the adequacy of recent recalls to address the risk of sudden unintended acceleration.”

The company is under a criminal investigation, and has received two subpoenas for documents from two House committees relating to the recalls, although whether they are directly related to the letter is unclear. The documents are related to accelerator issues in several models, as well as brake problems with the Prius hybrid car, and were served earlier in in February by a federal grand jury and the Securities and Exchange Commission. Toyota has released upwards of 75,000 pages of documents under the requests.

In a separate, though related, development, it has emerged that Toyota last year negotiated a limited recall for two models, the Toyota Camry and Lexus ES, that were affected by the accelerator recalls, saving the company an estimated $100 million. A confidential internal presentation in July 2009 made the claim, and a month later, a Lexus ES, one of the models under the limited recall crashed in California, killing four people. The claims apparently referenced a September, 2007 recall of floor mats that could trap gas pedals, the same problem that triggered a full recall of numerous Toyota cars to fix the same problem. In the same presentation, the company claimed to have avoided recalls of another model related to rust, as well as delaying new federal safety regulations.
