byAlma Abell

While it is always nice to take care of home improvement projects without the help of a professional, some tasks really do need more than the typical homeowner can provide. Less Waste

While there is bound to be some waste with any home improvement project, the fact is that the professionals with a Kitchen Flooring Service in Palatine will know how to manage the task and still keep the amount of waste to a minimum. Since they install flooring on a daily basis, they know all the ways to measure and cut, so that very little of the new flooring ends up in the trash. This is good news for the homeowner since less waste translates into fewer materials to buy. As a result, the new floor will likely end up costing less than if the owner had tried to manage the task alone.

Attractive Design

If the new flooring involves creating a design using tiles, rest assured a professional knows where to begin the first line and how to proceed from there. The result will be a pattern that is uniform and exactly what the homeowner had in mind. There are no worries about getting a little confused and choosing the wrong tile to set in place next.

The Project is Completed Faster

Professionals know how to prepare for the installation of new flooring and get the job done without delays. By contrast, a homeowner may have to rent or buy tools, figure out the best way to get started, and then learn a few tricks during the actual process. A professional already knows what must be done and how to do it properly. That saves a lot of time and will mean the floor is completed much sooner.

Apple introduces iPhone and Apple TV

Wednesday, January 10, 2007

Apple Inc. today has introduced the much-anticipated iPhone at the Macworld Conference in San Francisco.

The iPhone is claimed to be “a revolutionary mobile phone” as stated on the Apple website. The device appears to be running a mobile version of the Apple operating system Mac OSX. It is approximately the same size as a 5th generation iPod, it has a 3.5-inch LCD touchscreen display that is used to access all features of the phone including number dial, as well as making phone calls. The iPhone plays music, movies, displays pictures and is able to connect to a wireless network.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs unveiled the device by walking onto the stage and taking the iPhone out of his jeans pocket. During his 2 hour speech he stated that “Today Apple is going to reinvent the phone, We are going to make history today”.

Today Apple also released their Media Center device – Apple TV. It will directly compete with Microsoft’s Media Center operating system. Apple has taken a different approach to the media center market; rather than storing content (such as movies, music and photos) on the device, Apple TV connects to a computer (Mac and Windows) over a wirless network connection and plays all content stored on that computer. This makes it substantially easier for users to organize their media content.

Former Washington D.C. police officer sues district for racial discrimination and harassment

Friday, June 22, 2007

According to court documents obtained by Wikinews, Randy Squires, an African American male and a former police officer of the Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia (DCMPD) has filed a lawsuit against the department alleging racial discrimination and harassment by a fellow officer. Squires is also suing the former mayor of D.C., Anthony A. Williams, and the district’s Attorney Generals office. Squires is also suing his superior officer, Robert Atcheson, for racial discrimination and harassment.

“Defendant Atcheson treated Plaintiff differently than similarly situated Caucasian police officers in several respect[sic], including but not limited to assignments, evaluation, and disciplinary actions, deprivation of overtime and use of departmental vehicles,” stated court papers filed by Squires’ attorneys, Donald M. Temple and Dhamian A. Blue of Temple Law Offices in Washington D.C.

Squires accuses Atcheson, a white-caucasian male and a lieutenant in the Environmental Crimes Unit (ECU) Warrant Squad and the Paternity Warrant Squad, of discriminating against him on the basis of the color of his skin and also harassing him while on the job. Squires originally started to work in DCMPD 1988, and shortly after he was hired, he began to work in the ECU. Atcheson was in control of the unit Squires belonged to.

In court documents, Squires alleges Atcheson treated him with “flagrant racial discriminatory conduct,” like using the word “mope,” which is defined as slang for “nigger,” and that the discrimination was “designed to intimidate, insult, emasculate and humiliate” Squires. In one incident in 2002, during a training exercise, Atcheson allegedly “deprived Squires of appropriate breathing apparatus, which is designed to save life in emergency and hazardous situations,” but that the apparatus was “provided to two other caucasian officers.”

Documents also allege that Atcheson had “falsified” a report to North Carolina State Police after Squires was arrested and wrongfully charged with “unauthorized taking of a police vehicle.” Court documents say that the report to N.C. police states that “Atcheson falsely told Plaintiff (Squires) that he had photographic evidence of the police car outside Plaintiff’s home overnight and of Plaintiff driving the car from his home.”

Court documents also allege that Squires allegedly informed his superior officer of Atcheson, only known as ‘Captain Brito,’ of the incident, but no action was ever taken against Atcheson. Squires initially filed a complaint against Atcheson with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, (EEOC) in a letter on March March 8, 2005.

The Washington D.C. police department has investigated the claims made by Squires, which “revealed inappropriate conduct toward Squires,” but according to documents, no disciplinary action has been taken against Atcheson or his superiors.

The defendants “deny any and all allegations” that Squires has made against them and also state that Squires “failed to exhaust their administrative remedies and/or failed to comply with other mandatory filing requirements.” Defendants also say that “all actions taken by District (Washington D.C.) relating to Plaintiffs were necessary, reasonable, pursuant to lawful authority, and based on legitimate, non-discriminatory reasons” and that “the district denies that any district policymaker adopted, approved, condoned and/or maintained an unconstitutional policy, practice or custom of unlawful employment practices.”

Squires is asking at least US$350,000. Squires and the Defendants also request that a jury be present during the trial, which is scheduled to conclude on June 26.

Investigative Auditing: Finding And Retrieving What Is Yours

By Tom Gardner

When you lose your wallet or have your purse stolen, it is a big deal. Your money, your identity, your security are all gone, and your financial situation goes into Code Red. But you are just one person, with only so much money.

Just imagine that the same is true for a business, except that instead of a thousand dollars missing, it is hundreds of thousands, even millions. All things halt when money goes missing, and the dogs are sent out to trace the loot.

Finding and retrieving what has been stolen from a business is called investigative auditing. It is the forensic side of accounting. It is a skill that only a select few people have, as it requires not only knowledge of accounting but also the ability to perform investigative techniques. Below is an outline of what is involved.

Tracing the Money

When the money goes missing, the investigative auditors are called in to find the money trail and chase down the stolen funds. This is not only difficult, but very tedious work. It often isn’t as simple as finding which bank the money was put into. Perhaps the money is deposited in many accounts. Or perhaps the money is still in a suitcase. Regardless of where the money is at the time, it can be traced. This is due to the fact that all transactions are registered and accessible – if you know the right people. A investigative auditors job is to find the right people, uncover and follow the connections between each transaction, and map the trail. Then, once the money has been found, the auditors embark to recover the assets.

Bringing It Back

Recovering fully the stolen money is not as easy as finding where the money has gone. Often times an investigative auditor comes onto the scene a little too late. Like a crime scene investigator cannot stop the murder from taking place, but can perhaps find the murderer, so too works investigative auditing. It is understood that transactions have already taken place, as these transactions led to the money itself. The money has already partially been spent. So, full recovery of the funds is almost always impossible. Yet, partial recovery is always an option.

So when an investigative auditor goes on the hunt, they are looking to bring back as much money as they can. Yet, the company has already lost a significant amount and should weigh the cost of recovering the money. In the end, if the money and the thief are found, more money will be spent to seal the deal and quiet down the situation. Finding the money might not be worth all the effort, especially if only a small portion of the money is returned. Coming to the scene late is costly.

Prevention

The best way to use investigative auditing is to prevent large theft from happening by reporting and busting smaller thefts. A typical thief works his way up. He starts off small and then steals more and more, if he is not caught. Stopping him when he has only stolen a small amount could save a company millions. So, the best way to save money and stop financial fraud is through using investigative auditing in small matters, before a situation gets out of hand.

Two ill after eating burgers laced with multi-purpose cleaner in Bathurst, Australia

Thursday, March 25, 2010

A prank by three young kitchen staff at Hungry Jack’s fast food restaurant in the Central-Western New South Wales city of Bathurst went wrong when two customers required medical treatment after eating burgers they had laced with multi-purpose cleaner.

According to staff at the Emergency Department of Bathurst Hospital, two Hungry Jack’s customers became ill Sunday night after eating burgers contaminated with a chemical believed to be multi-purpose cleaner. One of the patrons was in a serious condition upon arrival at Bathurst Hospital due to being allergic to an ingredient in the cleaning product. “He presented to the emergency department as he was having an allergic reaction after eating a burger from Hungry Jacks, he was in a really bad way when he arrived here and if he had waited much longer it could have been much worse,” said a Greater Western Area Health Service employee. “We called Hungry Jacks and they said that three of their employees had been goofing off and sprayed multi-purpose cleaner inside the burgers so we then treated the patients for poisoning.”

Both customers are expected to make a full recovery. During an investigation undertaken by Wikinews reporter Nathan Carter, it was learned that the chemical sprayed into the burgers was KAY multipurpose cleaner which is reported to cause nausea, diarrhoea and mucosal and gastric irritation. The Material Safety Data Sheet for KAY multipurpose cleaner lists Antonic Surfactants as its hazardous ingredient.

In New South Wales, it is a criminal offence to make food intended for sale unsafe punishable by 2 years imprisonment. Due to restrictions on the publication of the name of young people involved in crimes in New South Wales, the names of kitchen staff can not be published. Wikinews was told by Hungry Jack’s staff that the staff involved in the incident remained employed by Hungry Jack’s. Josh, a Hungry Jack’s manager at the Bathurst restaurant, told Wikinews that his boss Adam was aware of the food contamination issue and would be taking steps to address it.
